Coramba Discovery
After 70 years IANTD with SOE and a team of divers on the IANTD vessel "Action" discover the lost wreck of the Coramba . Lost with all hands it has been a mystery as to what became of the coastal trader which was lost in one of Victoria's biggest storms in the early 1930's .
"Action" on its way on a search for another missing vessel lost in the 1860's picked up the Coramba on it's depth sounder .Although at the time not conclusive we knew we had the Coramba from its size and shape .The weather being too rough to dive it was decided to return to the site the following week to confirm its identity . Being nearly 15 nautical miles from its last known location searchers had been looking in the wrong place .
The author Des Williams who wrote a book on the Coramba and who had been searching for 30 years was present on the bridge of Action when the wreck was positively identified.
Although jubilant at finding her we were also sad for the loss of all the crew so many years ago.
Because of the extreme depth and weather conditions in Bass Strait the wreck is not always accessible.
A ceremony was held over the wreck some time later.
