While navigating a severe storm off Wilsons Promontory, a faulty valve disabled the ship's engine, causing her to lose steam. The vessel subsequently took on water, listed, and capsized.
The SS Vicky is a 165-foot steel collier that sank in Bass Strait on June 24, 1956. Her wreckage rests in deep waters off the coast of Wilsons Promontory, Victoria. Discovered by maritime archaeologists, the site lies near the Gippsland coast and has been the subject of recent offshore surveys.
